Gillingham and Portsmouth sit a single point and one position apart in the bottom half of the League One table, however they are moving in opposite directions to each other. Gillingham have managed just one win from their last four league games and are slowly drifting down the division as a result while Pompey have won two of their last three and put firmly behind them a dismal start to the campaign. OK so they’re hardly hitting the heights of last season when they made it into the League One play-offs courtesy of their top-four finish, however they are certainly moving in the right direction and will be confident of maintaining their excellent run when they entertain Gillingham at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Gillingham were thumped to the tune of 4-0 by League One high-flyers Ipswich Town in the Trophy on Tuesday, this being the Gills’ third defeat in four competitive outings. Indeed their only win during this time was a 3-1 victory over struggling Southend United at Priestfield and in all honesty we don’t fancy the Medway side’s chances on the south-coast this weekend, especially so since they have failed to win away from home this term.

The Gills have conceded seven goals in their last two trips with none scored in reply and while we don’t envisage this weekend’s outing being quite so one-sided, we don’t expect the visitors to add to the scoresheet at Fratton Park, Ladbrokes Bookmakers going 19/10 on Portsmouth to win-to-nil.
